Joanie's Cheese Straws

In New Orleans, where every street corner hums with history and every meal tells a story, the tradition of Joanie's Cheese Straws captures the city's soul. For Joanie, these crispy, savory delights are more than just a recipe—they’re a testament to five generations of family, friendship, and joyful gatherings.

The story begins in 1838 when a young man from Bordeaux, France, falls in love with a first-generation New Orleanian, the daughter of French and Spanish parents. Their union mirrored the city itself—a rich blend of cultures, flavors, and traditions that would shape their descendants for generations to come.

Cheese straws have always been part of that story. In New Orleans's relentless humidity, imported cheese didn’t last long, so resourceful cooks found a way to transform it into something magical—golden, crispy bites kissed with a hint of cayenne. By the late 1800s, these pailles de fromage weren’t just a treat; they became the currency of connection, the centerpiece of celebrations that brought people together.

For Joanie, cheese straws weren’t just something to eat—they were the heart of every family celebration. Growing up as one of six sisters, she spent countless hours in her mother’s pink kitchen, where love was measured in laughter and the scent of warm cheese straws. She learned early on that food wasn’t just about flavor; it's about turning strangers into friends and making every occasion feel special.

Now in her 60s, Joanie is stepping into a new chapter by launching Joanie's Cheese Straws. As a proud New Orleanian, wife, mother,  and enthusiastic entrepreneur, her journey celebrates the idea that it’s never too late to follow your dreams.
